There is no denying this year’s Grammy Awards were unforgettable for everyone watching. From Billie Eilish making history becoming the youngest person ever to win a Grammy for ‘Album of the Year’, to the heartbreaking tributes for Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna, and the other seven victims of the horror Calabasas helicopter crash, the night provoked many emotions. It was also a night for fashion at the most significant music awards event of the year. The 62nd annual Grammy awards saw the world’s biggest celebrities and designers come together to create remarkable fashion moments.

Alicia Keys hosted the awards ceremony this year, and in turn, showcased a portfolio of outfits. With five costume changes, the host provided plenty of fashion inspiration for viewers. The singer opened the show in a one-shoulder silver Versace sequined dress. While Keys looked impeccable; she explained that hosting was very tough having heard of the news only hours before of Bryant and his daughter passing away, as well as seven others, including children. Keys gave a heartfelt speech paying tribute to Bryant, his family and all other victims impacted by the tragic event.

Keys once again wore Versace in a black bedazzled jumpsuit, and colourful quintessential Versace styled over the knee boots. The host paired back her next two outfits in a denim ensemble. Her complementing jeans and denim jacket featured subtle sequin detail and a grey t-shirt put together by her stylist Jason Bolden. This was contrasted by the brilliant and bright pink two-piece pantsuit and cropped jacket that Keys wore. This was styled with sliver sparkled heels, a trend modelled by many on the night.

Pink suits were trending this year with Keys, Tyler the Creator and Lil Nas X all modelling bright magenta shades. Tyler the Creator wore a pink bellhop inspired suit by Golf Le Fleure including a matching pink suitcase. The rapper wore a Russian red ushanka hat as well as white gloves and sunglasses. Lil Nas X wore a hot pink cowboy hat and a suit with gold detailing by Versace. The ensemble also featured an edgy shirt comprised of mesh and harnesses under the copped jacket.

While Alicia Keys honoured Kobe Bryant in a speech when hosting the awards, other celebrities honoured the late basketball star through their fashion choices. Priyanka Chopra Jonas wore a Ralph & Russo gown featuring a navel-baring neckline, pink fringe and ivory sleeves with floral details. The actress honoured Kobe through her nail art, with the number ’24’ appearing on her pointer finger. Her husband, Nick Jonas, wore a gold metallic tuxedo, also paying tribute to the basketball star through wearing a purple ribbon, the colour of Kobe’s former team the LA Lakers.

Billie Eilish walked away in style with four Grammy awards for the best new artist, the song of the year, record of the year and album of the year. The singer was dressed head to toe in Gucci in a black and green oversized pantsuit. Eilish, donning black and green hair and a set of emerald green nails made a definite statement on the red carpet.

Lizzo wore a show-stopping gown by Atelier Versace and Lorraine Schwartz jewels. The singer looked fabulous in an all-white corseted, silver beaded dress with a matching fur shawl. Known for her unbelievable confidence and promoting self-love, Lizzo stood out in the crowd with her radiance and confidence.

At an event full of extravagant and luxurious custom-designed outfits from the world’s most famous designers, Lana Del Rey, made a surprise choice when she revealed that her dress was from a local mall. The Aidan Mattox dress was dripping head to toe in silver beads with a 1920’s flapper girl styled fringe. Although it was a last-minute decision, the singer made the style look like custom made haute couture.

With her iconic high ponytail, Ariana Grande made an entrance wearing two different looks on the red carpet. The first fashion moment featured a custom made Giambattista Valli Haute Couture strapless silver gown. The dress was layered with a tiered tulle skirt, and Grande accessorised with retro silver satin gloves. The star then made an outfit change into a similar grey-toned separate piece created by Schiaparelli. When questioned by red-carpet reporters, Grande revealed that she decided to wear two ensembles as she couldn’t decide which one to wear!

The night saw fabulous couples fashion with the likes of Chrissy Teigan and John Legend. Teigan wore an apricot coloured Yanina Couture dress with ruffled shoulders, while her husband wore an asymmetrical grey suit. Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton also walked the red carpet in style with Stefani wearing white over the knee boots and a Dolce and Gabbana white mini dress embellished with shells. Shelton wore a classic black suit in contrast to his partner.

Dua Lipa stunned in a simplistic ivory silk two-piece design by Alexander Wang, opting to add drama through topaz blue eye shadow and a dramatic two-tone hairstyle. Simplistic was not in the vocabulary of Billy Porter who stole the show in a custom Baja East blue jumpsuit and matching jacket with a metallic silver fringe. Not one to shy away from eclectic fashion, Porter accessorised with a jewelled spider bracelet, silver nail polish, sky-blue eye shadow and a wide-brim hat which included a retractable fringe that uncovered his face. This hat was controlled remotely by Porter’s stylist. The outfit was completed with silver sequined platform boots.

While there was a lot of shock and sadness surrounding the passing of basketball star Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna and the other Calabasas helicopter victims, the night was unforgettable for its outstanding musical performances and its remarkable fashion moments. If one thing is clear, it is that the arts can bring us all together. Fashion and musical performance go hand in hand as forms of expression and can help us celebrate who we are. Congratulations to all then Grammy award winners and the stars that brought it to the red carpet!
